Microsoft Easy Fix Windows 10 for Stole32tlb

Ever since the periodic automatic Windows 10 update a couple of weeks ago, I have been getting the following pop-up error every time I open MS Excel: "Microsoft Office Excel - stdole32.tlb - OK" (snapshot attached). After clicking OK, another pop-up says "Configuring Microsoft Office Home and Student 2007 ..." The configuration process takes about 45 seconds, and then Excel finally opens.
When I open MS Word, a similar configuration process initiates, but automatically, i.e., without the stdole32.tlb pop-up. It takes about 30 seconds to complete the configuration.
I have run Malwarebytes and also a Windows Defender full system scan: no threats found.
In an attempt to solve the stdole32.tlb problem, I followed the instructions at
I then attempted to restore the original registry by closing out all other processes and importing the back-up that I had created. The import failed, and the pop-up said: "Registry Editor - Cannot import C:\registry backup.reg: Not all data was successfully written to the registry. Some keys are open by the system or other processes, or you have sufficient privileges to perform this operation."
So, two problems now: stdole32.tlb error and apparent registry corruption. Helpful advice would be appreciated.

This is additional information that somehow got deleted from the original post. After "I followed the instructions at ....", please add:
"... a Microsoft Community website article (answers.microsoft.com) that specifically addresses the stdole32.tlb issue. I backed up the registry and proceeded with the instructions. They required selecting choices that did not exactly match those available, but I did my semi-educated best. My actions were apparently faulty, because, in the end, the instructions did not clear the problem."

Click on Search in the Taskbar and type cmd.
Under Best Match you will see Command Prompt, right click on it and select Run as Administrator.
Copy and paste the command below in the Command Prompt, then press Enter.
dism.exe /image:c:\ /cleanup-image /revertpendingactions
If this does not resolve the problem use the instructions below.
Do a System Restore. Use a restore point dated prior to the update.
Press the Windows key 
and the R key to open the Run box.
When the Run box opens copy and paste rstrui.exe in the Run box, then press OK.
When System Restore opens tap/click on Next. You will need to select a restore point prior to the date your problem started. You will see a check box in the lower left portion of the page for Show more restore points to see more restore point options.
Follow the prompts to complete the system restore.
This will not uninstall the update, but it may resolve the error. The other option would be to uninstall your copy of office and reinstall it.

Thank you for the detailed advice, Tree Hugger. I did the following with the indicated results.
- Entered the command dism.exe /image:c:\ /cleanup-image /revertpendingactions and got Error 87 (snapshot attached). I also got the familiar stdole32.tlb error when opening Excel.
- Attempted to restore the system to a date prior to the problem. The earliest date available was Dec 29, 2017, which is long after the problem started (snapshot attached). I used that date anyway, and got the error "System Restore did not complete successfully" (snapshot attached). On the second try, I disabled Windows Defender anti-virus temporarily as suggested in the error message and got the same error.
It appears I will need to uninstall and reinstall Windows Office 2007. However, this may not clear the registry corruption, which seems to be affecting other programs. Namely, I have not been able to manage my external scanning device since yesterday when I attempted the registry change recommended on the Microsoft website. Any additional suggestions would be appreciated. Thank you, and Happy New Year!

Is Office and Student 2007 the only Office that you have on the machine? (No Office 365 or anything else)
If it were my machine I would uninstall 2007, restart machine.
Then I would do a SFC (System File Check)
Then I would run DISM (cmd as administrator)
DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
Restart again and reinstall 2007.

This problem is the result of the Fall Update 1709. Microsoft has a Easy Fix for this problem, you can find it at Microsoft Office 2010 Professional Plus configures each time you start.
Scroll down to Method 1. Under Here's an easy fix click/tap on Download, in the download dialogue box click/tap on Run or [/b]Open[/b]. This is an automatic fix, just download it and let it do the job.

Thank you for the additional advice.

- I do not have MS Office 365. I did see MS Office Live Add-in in my program list, as well as several other programs in the Office 2007 suite, such as Publisher 2007, OneNote 2007, Clip Organizer, Picture Manager, etc.
- opera: I have searched high and low for my original MS Office 2007 CD. It is not to be found. So, if I uninstall Office 2007, it will be gone forever. I may do it anyway, but not yet.

- I proceeded with Easy Fix, Method 1. Progress: MS Word no longer configures when I open it. However, opening Excel continues to yield the stdole32.tlb error and also configures.
- I proceeded with Method 2, which was not applicable.
- I proceeded with Method 3 and found that I could not uncheck Live Add-in, even as an administrator. So, I uninstalled it. No improvement - opening Excel continues to yield the stdole32.tlb error and also configures.
Present status:
- stdole32.tlb error when opening MS Office Excel.
- Peripheral equipment management problems: no access to my printer or my scanner (two separate devices), probably because of the registry corruption. Maybe I should post a new topic for the registry issue, but I will take your recommendation.

I was wondering on fix excel yourself if the changes I made would work for it. I notice the code seem for version 14 and for Word. My reg shows version 12 and Excel does not have a NoReReg
Do you think this changed line will work?
reg add HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Office\12.0\Excel\Options /v NoReReg /t REG_DWORD /d 1
